Rasenna

The lands of Rasenna are comprised of rolling hills and vast savannahs; the Rassenae put these to effective use, covering the hillsides in prime vineyards, and the flatlands in herds of strong, swift horses. So core are these to their culture that exceedingly few children over the age of eight know not the taste of wine, nor how to ride a small horse. Because of these specializations, much of Rasenna’s populus is reliant upon imported food, though with the unbeatable quality and quantity of wine the nation exports, this cost is marginal. This need for stable trade does, however, explain Rasenna’s early support for the Republic; indeed, it was the second city-state to join, following only Nikea, and its horses and experienced cavalrymen would prove invaluable in coming conflicts.

Nikeia

A city-state with a long history of military supremacy, Nikea was among the first to recognize the benefits of joining the fledgling Republic; indeed, the Nikean army formed the core of the Republic’s forces, and numerous Nikean soldiers would be venerated as heroes for their deeds during various conflicts. The populace emphasizes duty, honor, and loyalty above all else. All citizens must serve in the military for two years upon reaching adulthood, and are expected to keep themselves fit and trained in the event that they are called back to serve during times of crisis. Expert foot soldiers, Nikean combat theory has set the standard for infantry tactics within the republic.

Nikea is also home to the Necropolis of Heroes. The pristine seaside cemetery is guarded by a giant statue of Ialeus, an ancient hero who, according to legend, defeated the first necromancer in battle and prevented their conquest. Now deified, Ialeus guards the souls of heroes and soldiers in the afterlife. The Nikean Necropolis has proven incapable of being tampered with due to divine protection, and thus, powerful persons tend to be buried there so their power cannot be abused via necromancy.

Soter

Referred to as ‘The Breadbasket of the Republic’, the Soteric people are the Republic’s foremost experts on agriculture. Situated at the coastal delta where two long, ponderous rivers empty into the sea, Soter is known for its extensive tracts of lush, fertile farmland. The huge swathes of arable soil produce staggering amounts of varying grains and vegetables, and the outlying areas, less desirable for planting, still provide prime grazing land for cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Additionally, Soter is well known for exporting its own citizens; experienced farm personnel are in high demand across the Republic, and are well paid to manage farms, and to train locals in the latest farming techniques and technologies.

Emporiopolis

With few exploitable natural resources available in their lands, Emporiopolis quickly became adept at the art of trade; facilitating the transfer of goods between buyers and sellers for a modest fee. Over time, their reputation as a reliable brokerage institution made the city-state the clear hub of trade in the area, and the influx of money enabled them to pioneer revolutionary practices such as banking, credit, insurance, and the minting of standardized coinage. The ‘City of Silver’ ran into a significant crisis when a corrupt official, a rarity in the strictly monitored bureaucracy, embezzled several entire ships worth of bullion, dealing a catastrophic blow to Emporiopolis’ economy and reputation. The mastermind was apprehended as his treasure fleet attempted to sneak through Ptergylian waters, and the fortune was turned over to the Republic, who used it as leverage to entice Emporiopolis into joining. Their hands tied, Emporiopolis acquiesced, and upon their integration, the stolen funds were returned. Additionally, trade tariffs were significantly lowered between member states of the Republic, and with the new ease of access, Emporiopolis soon found its coinage becoming the standard, and its insurance and banking companies prospered. Today, they facilitate supply and logistics for the Draconean Republic’s military forces, and their accountants and financiers range across the Republic, stabilizing and enriching other member states. They regularly fund exploratory expeditions, and their trade emissaries have opened up new opportunities across the continents and seas.
